? A UK-based charity called ‘The Medical Detection Dogs’ trains canines to sniff & detect human disease. It has successfully trained dogs to identify the scents of maladies such as Malaria, Cancer, & Parkinson’s disease already.
? Recently, the charity has partnered with Durham University & The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) on a trial to see if dogs can sniff out the presence of patients infected with COVID-19.
? LSHTM is working with a Cocker Spaniel and a Labrador Retriever, as both breeds have an unusually acute sense of smell and the ability to be trained.
? With the scarcity of testing kits, these sniffer dogs could be a huge boon if their research stands true.
● Cocker Spaniels were previously hunter dogs in the U.K. & were skilled at hunting a bird called the Woodcock, which is where the term “Cocker” came from.
● Labrador Retrievers are used by fishermen to catch fish because they are excellent swimmers & have
water-resistant double coats that provide insulation.
