Cock-A-Doodle-Doo (Softly, Please)!

WARNING: Don’t put you ear right next to a rooster because…
At 120 decibels there can be permanent hearing loss!

The morning rooster crow, that sound of “cock-a-doodle-doo” heard on farms, is familiar to everyone for its penetrating noise. If you stand close to one, your eardrums will receive a sound wave of about 100 decibels (a sound’s loudness is measured in decibels or “dB”).
That’s roughly equivalent to the sound of a chainsaw. The calls of some roosters have been measured as loud as 140 decibels, like the sound of a military jet aircraft at take-off.

Belgian researchers found out that roosters have special ears which allow them to get as loud as they want. They studied 3 roosters by strapping microphones to their heads and measuring the sound levels from different distances. They also conducted micro-CT scans of their ears with their beaks opened and closed.
The researchers discovered that when roosters open their beaks fully, their auditory canals completely close off. How convenient for roosters…it’s like having built in earplugs!

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒔?
Researchers found their ear canals also will shut, but not fully. So hens can still here some noise when they call out. That may explain why hens make noises up to about 70 decibels, which is more like the sound of a loud vacuum cleaner.

𝑪𝒐𝒐𝒍 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒔:
🐓Roosters crow so loudly out of territorial instinct, i.e. as a way to tell other roosters to stay away from their hens.
🐓Roosters are protectors and find food for their flock.
🐓”Cock-a-doodle-doos” come at daybreak because roosters have circadian rhythms, just like humans, that cause them to get very active early in the morning.
