Did you know there is a long history in celebrating mothers?
? In ancient times the Greeks and Romans honoured the Mother Goddesses; Cybele, Rhea & Hilaria.
✝️ Early Christians across Europe celebrated a religious festival known as ‘Mothering Sunday’ which included the celebration of actual mothers many centuries later.
?️ In 1870, Julia Ward Howe, a former nurse during the American Civil War wanted to create a special day to encourage mothers to unite peacefully & try to stop their sons from fighting against each other.
? In 1908, peacemaker Anna Jarvis organized a ceremony to honour her mother and all mothers,
which marked the first public observance of Mother’s Day.
? The symbolic white carnation that represents truth & purity of motherly love was also initiated by her.
? On 9th May 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day,
“as a public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”
