?? The Greeks loved sport and they were known for their competitive spirit. The Olympic Games began over 2,700 plus years ago in Olympia, located in South-West Greece. Originally, the games were part of a religious festival held in honour of Zeus, the king of the Gods.
?️ Every 4 years, around 50,000 people would come from all over Greece to watch the games.
? Horse races, chariot races, boxing, wrestling, and foot races were all popular events.
? There were no gold, silver and bronze medals. Winners were given a wreath of leaves and would receive a hero’s welcome back in their home cities. They were seen as being touched by the Gods.
??? Only men, boys & unmarried girls were allowed to attend to attend the Olympic Games. Married women were not allowed.
??? One story tells of a mother so keen to see her son compete, that she broke the no-women rule & disguised herself as a man!
