🐾 IARD began in 1998, fifty years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.
🐾 The organizers chose Dec 10th of that year to highlight that animals, like humans, should have rights, and to raise awareness of all forms of violence against animals.
🐾 IARD continues to be celebrated annually and serves as a reminder that certain freedoms should be extended to all living beings.

▪️Since animals cannot give voice for their own protection, humans must do it for them.
▪️Animals are also sentient (i.e. thinking) beings with feelings and have a right to live free from abuse. We, as humans must show them kindness and to try not to exploit them for our own benefit.
▪️For example, many fashion brands no longer sell clothes made from fur that has been inhumanely taken from animals.
🔸The first International Animal Rights Day event took place in the Sports Palace of Berlin, Germany.
🔹More than 5,000 people went to the first event.
🔸The founder of IARD was a writer and an animal activist.
