THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND is wonderful & inspirational book by William Kamkwamba & Bryan Mealer (available on Amazon). The book has also been made into a movie & can be viewed on Netflix (written, directed & starring Chiwetel Ejiofor).
It is a poignant true life story of a boy named William Kamkwamba, living in Malawi, a drought ravaged part of Africa. The people of Malawi were extremely poor & didn’t have electricity or running water, making life very tough for them.
At the age of 14, William had to drop out of school as his family could no longer afford the fees.
But this didn’t deter the young boy from studying. With his keen interest in how mechanical things work, William managed to sneak into the library & read science books to educate himself.
He used his skill & knowledge to build a windmill by collecting junkyard scraps, which eventually brought electricity & life-saving water to his village. His windmill was a huge success & he became the village hero!
Hard work, determination & perseverance paid off for William & from being a school drop out, he was invited to give TED Talks (viewed by millions) & eventually graduated from Dartmouth College
