The (Not So) Funny Bone

Funny Bone

Have you ever hit your elbow against something and experienced shooting waves pain?
Most of us have indeed. It’s ironical that the bone that can be so painful is called the ‘Funny Bone’ when there’s really nothing funny about it!

𝑳𝒆𝒕’𝒔 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒕…
💥 The pain is due to the presence of a nerve called the ulnar nerve.
💥 This nerve runs from the neck to the hand. It travels through a tunnel of tissue running under a bump of bone at the inside of your elbow.
💥 At this bump, the nerve is close to your skin and the protection is thin.
💥 When you bang the elbow, this nerve gets compressed, and a sudden shock shoots through your arm making a tingly feeling at the ring and pinky fingers.
💥 This is called the ulnar nerve distribution.

You can tell whether the ulnar nerve is damaged if there is a big flaming sensation in your arm, hand, or finger. Or, you may feel numbness or a tingling feeling in your arm or finger that keeps growing when you are typing or writing. It also may need to be checked out by a doctor if you feel unusual sensations in the hand, fingers, or arm.

⚡️Fortunately, however, most of the time the sensation will most likely be very quickly resolved.
⚡️You probably can shake your arm till the symptoms go away.
⚡️You may also straighten your forearm or keep bending it.

〽️ Nerves are like “electrical cables” in the body carrying messages between the brain and muscles.
〽️ All of the nerves for the upper body arise initially from the spinal cord and there are 3 main nerves going through the arm to the fingers (the radial, median and ulnar nerve).
〽️ The ulnar nerve links to the little finger and half of the ring finger. It also allows you to move the little muscles in the hand, and some big muscles in the forearm.
