The Tallest Among Trillions Of Trees!

One would think that a tree that is as high as a one storey building is quite high…right? But, did you know that there is a tree that is the equivalent to the height of a ten storey building!?

Standing tall, this gigantic tree is called Hyperion from the coast redwood family (Sequoia sempervirens) and is found in California. The redwoods are some of the tallest trees in the world defying the laws physics as it is hard for water to be traveling up to that height!

It s surprising that the Hyperion wasn’t discovered until 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins & Michael Taylor at a remote part of the Redwood National Park in California. They measured it using a professional laser measuring tool and found that it eclipsed the world record tree height (The Stratosphere Giant-369 feet).

𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒔:
🌲The Hyperion stands tall at 379.1 feet! (To put into perspective, the Statue of Liberty is 305 feet including its pedestal).
🌲It was named after the Greek mythologic titan – Hyperion, which means “The High One”.
🌲One story even says that the Hyperion had a narrow escape from being cut!
🌲Studies suggest that the tree would have grown even taller if the woodpeckers hadn’t damaged the top.
🌲Rangers of the Redwood National Park generally are tight lipped about the location of this giant to preserve the tree and protect it from damage.

Redwoods are one of the oldest tress and have the record for having the the largest diameter base and being the tallest trees.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝟑 𝑻𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒘𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑨𝒓𝒆:
1. Giant Sequoia- Having the largest base.
2. Dawn Redwood- Oldest and fast growing tree.
3. Coast Redwood- Tallest of all trees.

The Hyperion takes the crown and really must feel on top of the word!
